Social Connections

Quick Start: Connections Basic client Updated Mar 7, 2026

Facebook, Instagram, and any other social platform connections.

Social Connections

Social connections is the step where the client authenticates their Facebook, Instagram, and any other social media accounts within the GHL sub-account. Like the GBP connection, this requires the client to log in with their own credentials and grant permissions. Once connected, the sub-account can post to social media, pull in messages from social DMs into the unified inbox, and enable social-specific automations.

Why This Matters

Social media is where many local businesses get their most engaged leads. A potential customer who messages a business on Facebook or Instagram expects a fast response. If those messages only appear in the native social media apps, they compete with personal notifications and are easy to miss. Connecting social accounts to GHL routes those messages into the conversations inbox alongside SMS, email, and other channels. Everything in one place.

Without the connection, you also lose the ability to post content from GHL’s social planner. Your client would need to manage social media separately, which fragments their marketing and reduces the perceived value of your system. For agencies that include social media management in their packages, the connection is non-negotiable.

The timing matters because these connections require client authentication. Facebook and Instagram have become increasingly strict about third-party access. The client must be the page admin, and the connection process involves navigating Meta’s permissions screens, which can be confusing. Having the client do this live on the call while you guide them is far more reliable than sending instructions and hoping for the best.

How to Think About It

Social connections are a client action with agency guidance. You navigate to the integrations screen and tell the client what to click, but they are the ones logging into Facebook, selecting the correct page, and granting permissions. Your role is navigator, not driver.

Before starting, confirm which social accounts the client wants to connect. Some businesses have a Facebook Page but no Instagram Business account. Some have both. Some have multiple Facebook Pages and need to select the right one. Ask: “Which Facebook Page is your primary business page?” and “Do you have an Instagram Business account connected to it?”

The Meta ecosystem ties Facebook and Instagram together. If the client’s Instagram is not converted to a Business account and linked to their Facebook Page, the Instagram connection will not work. This is a common surprise. If you hit this wall, make a note and move on. Converting a personal Instagram to a business account is a separate task that the client can handle after the call.

Common Mistakes

Not verifying the client is a Facebook Page admin. Only Page admins can grant third-party access. If the client is an editor or a contributor, the connection will fail. Check their role before attempting the connection. If they are not an admin, they need to be promoted by whoever controls the Page.

Connecting a personal Facebook profile instead of a Page. GHL connects to Facebook Pages, not personal profiles. Some clients do not understand the difference. Verify they are selecting their business Page when prompted, not their personal account.

Ignoring Instagram Business account requirements. Instagram connections through GHL require a Business or Creator account, not a personal account. The account must also be linked to a Facebook Page. If these prerequisites are not met, the connection will not complete. Flag the issue and provide instructions for converting and linking the accounts.

Granting too few permissions. When Meta asks the client to approve permissions, they sometimes uncheck options because they are not sure what they mean. Fewer permissions means less functionality. Walk the client through the permissions screen and explain that each permission enables specific features like posting, messaging, and ad management.

Not testing the connection afterward. After authentication, verify that the correct Facebook Page and Instagram account appear in GHL. Check that you can see the page name, that messaging is enabled, and that the social planner shows the connected accounts. A completed authentication does not always mean a working connection.

Tools Involved

Social connections are managed through the Integrations section in GHL settings. Once connected, social messaging flows into Conversations, and content scheduling happens through the Social Planner. If the client’s package includes social media advertising, the ad account connection is handled separately in Ads Accounts. After social accounts are connected, a quick demo of the Social Planner helps the client see immediate value.

Where This Fits

Social connections run at sequence position 12, alongside GBP Connection, Google Calendar, and Ads Accounts. All of these are client-authenticated connections that depend on Sub-Account Access. Once social accounts are connected, they enable the Social Planner demo at position 13 and are checked again during the Integrations Sweep at position 14.

Common Questions

What if the client does not have a Facebook Business Page? Creating a Facebook Page is a quick process, but it is not a quick start call activity. If the client only has a personal profile, note it as a follow-up task. They can create a Page after the call and you can connect it during a subsequent session or via guided instructions.

Can I connect TikTok or LinkedIn through GHL? GHL’s social integration support evolves over time. As of early 2026, Facebook and Instagram are the primary supported platforms. Check the integrations page for the latest options. If the client needs TikTok or LinkedIn management, that may require a separate tool.

What happens to social messages that come in before the connection is live? Only messages received after the connection is established appear in the GHL conversations inbox. Historical messages are not synced. This is worth mentioning to the client so they know to keep checking native social apps for any ongoing conversations until the connection is confirmed.
